Licensed estheticians who specialize in skincare say that the type of regimen that you use daily should be determined by the type of skin that you have. The skin is the biggest organ in your body and it has its own functionalities and intricacies the same as all of the other organs that you have in you. Knowing the way that your skin functions is the only way that you will be able to determine the best course of treatment for it. Every person’s skin is unique just like any person’s heart functions differently or eyesight will vary, so taking the time to get to know your skin is extremely important.
The first method to determine your skin type is called the Bare-Faced Method. It means that you should clean everything off of your face until you have a blank canvas. Do not add your normal moisturizer or treatment, just clean it until you are left with your bare face in its natural state. Wait for about 30 minutes and take a close look at your skin in the mirror to determine if it is shiny. Wait for another 30 minutes and try to smile or frown or wrinkle your nose while looking in the mirror. If you see that you have tightness in your skin when you try to make facial expressions, then your skin is probably dry. If you see a lot of shine on your cheeks then you probably have oily skin. If you notice that there is no shine on your cheeks but there is shine on your nose and forehead then you probably have normal or combination skin.
If you want answers about your skin type faster than the Bare-Faced Method then you should buy some blotting paper. You will still have to wash your face and leave it bare, but after thirty minutes you should be able to just blot your face in various areas and look at the paper under a light. If your paper shows no oil at all then your skin is likely dry because you are not picking up any of the natural oils that are normally on our skin. If there is a lot of oil then you have oily skin, but if you have oil in only select areas (particularly the T-zone of your face) then you probably have either normal or combination skin.
If you have dry skin then you will not only get tightness in your face all day, but you will also get flakiness in your skin like you would get dandruff from a dry scalp. This can be a challenge when wearing makeup because it can make it look uneven and it can also dry your skin out even more if you are not using the quality products in your makeup. If you have oily skin then your face can struggle with clogging of large pores and stretching your pores out even more. Knowing your skin type will tell you exactly how to combat these various issues on your face.
Knowing the type of skin that you have will allow you to get the best skincare routine down, but if you really are having a hard time figuring it out then you should ask a licensed esthetician the next time that you schedule a facial. Licensed estheticians are trained to know exactly what type of skin you have so that they can determine the best products to use on your face and they also have magnifying tools to get a closer look at the health of your pores before they make any determinations. If you are getting regular facials, they will also know what products work the best for you and they can help you correct your skin on a regular basis as you get older and your body changes.
